1. WHAT ARE COOKIES?
A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you access certain web pages. Cookies allow a web page, among other things, to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or their computer and, depending on the information they contain and how you use your computer, they can be used to recognize the user.
2. TYPES OF COOKIES
According to the entity that manages the team or domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, we can distinguish:
- Own cookies: Those sent to the user's terminal equipment from a device or domain managed by the publisher themselves, and from which the service requested by the user is provided. They are also known as first-party cookies.
- Third-party cookies: Those that are sent to the user's terminal equipment from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through cookies. They are also called third-party cookies.
If cookies are installed from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they are considered third-party cookies.
According to the time period they remain active on the terminal equipment, we can distinguish:
- Session cookies: They are a type of cookies designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information that is only of interest to keep for the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion (for example: a list of purchased products). These cookies are automatically deleted when the user closes their browser.
- Persistent cookies: They are a type of cookies in which the data is still stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie owner, ranging from a few minutes to several years.
According to the purpose for which the data obtained through cookies is processed, we can distinguish between:
- Technical cookies: Those that allow the user to navigate through a website, platform, or application and use the different options or services available, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted access parts, remembering the elements that make up an order, using security elements during navigation, or sharing content through social networks.
- Personalization cookies: Those that allow the user to access the service with some predefined general characteristics based on a series of criteria on the user's terminal such as language, the type of browser through which the service is accessed, the regional settings from which the service is accessed, etc.
- Analysis cookies: Those that allow the person responsible for them to track and analyze the behavior of users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected by this type of cookies is used to measure the activity of the websites, application, or platform and to create browsing profiles of the users of said sites, applications, and platforms, in order to make improvements based on the analysis of the usage data by the service users.
- Advertising cookies: Those that allow for the most efficient management of advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency of ad display.
- Behavioral advertising cookies: Those that allow for the most efficient management of advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information on user behavior obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, enabling the development of a specific profile to display advertising based on it.
